Setting Reduction Targets

The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) is a partnership between CDP, UN Global Compact, WWF, and the World Resources Institute. The partnership encourages ambitious climate action in the private sector by enabling organizations to set science-based emission reduction targets. Organizations can submit an application to SBTi to have their climate targets validated and approved. All companies taking action based on science-based targets, including Ahold Delhaize (our parent company), are listed on the website. We encourage you to commit to SBTi by 2025.

Signing the SBTi commitment letter

The process towards SBTi commitment can be started by registering here. Please note that small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) may use the dedicated SBTi route, which is available here.

Next steps after committing to SBTi

After signing and submitting the commitment letter, you have 24 months to calculate your organization's footprint (Scope 1-2 and Scope 3) and to develop and submit climate targets in line with the 1.5°C warming scenario. Next steps:

  1. Develop your target in line with SBTi's science-based criteria
  2. Submit your target for validation
  3. Communicate your target and inform stakeholders
  4. Report your emissions annually and monitor progress

Guidelines

For companies that derive a significant portion of their revenue from forestry and/or agriculture, SBTi has developed a sector-specific guideline (FLAG guideline), which is available here.
