We speak with Carlos Cantoni from Vertbaudet about reaching Dutch and Belgian families, growing via bol, and the opportunities they see in the Benelux.

What made the Benelux a logical next step in your international growth?

At Vertbaudet, we have been supporting families for more than 60 years. The Benelux felt naturally like an important step in our international development: these are markets close to France, with high expectations regarding quality, safety, and the world of children, which align perfectly with our DNA. Our ambition is to be present wherever parents search for our items; strengthening our presence in the Benelux therefore fits completely within this strategy.

Why did you choose bol?

Today, bol is the go-to platform in the Netherlands and Belgium. For a brand like Vertbaudet, being present via bol allows us to reach a very broad target audience of parents who already trust the platform. Besides visibility, bol offers us a solid environment to sustainably develop our activity in these markets further.

What role has bol played in building trust with Dutch and Belgian customers?

When you expand into a new market, trust is essential. Customers know bol, already use the platform, and make their daily purchases there.

Being present on a trusted marketplace makes it easier for new customers to discover our brand and lowers the threshold to buy from an international partner for the first time.

What is the main strength of bol?

Knowledge of the local market. Bol understands the expectations of Belgian and Dutch customers extremely well. That proximity to the market is a real asset for an international brand like Vertbaudet.

What surprised you most after starting via bol?

The speed with which customers embrace our offer when it meets their expectations. We were also pleasantly surprised by the quality of the collaboration with the teams at bol, who support us in developing our activity and help us identify new opportunities. Finally, it also became clear how important it is to continuously improve and adapt our catalogue to get more visibility.

What is the most important best practice you have learned so far?

Being present on a marketplace doesn't just mean publishing a catalogue. It is essential to continuously work on the quality of content, visuals, item availability, and the customer experience: those elements really make the difference in performance.

Looking back: what were the biggest challenges during the startup phase?

Like with any new market, you have to be willing to learn. One of the main challenges is adapting your approach to local expectations, whether it concerns content, product range, or buying behaviour. Today, we continue to refine our offer based on the insights we gather from the market.

What are the results so far?

We are pleased with the momentum we have seen since our launch. Our presence via bol allows us to gradually increase our visibility among Dutch and Belgian families, while further developing our business in these markets. We still see plenty of growth potential and want to keep expanding our offer.

What would you say to other French partners looking to grow in the Benelux?

The Benelux offers a real opportunity for French brands. It is important to invest in your offer, content, and customer experience. Partnering with a partner like bol helps to accelerate this process and approach these markets from a strong foundation.

My advice would be to treat these markets as fully-fledged markets, with their own specific expectations and consumers.

What is your vision for the partnership with bol in the coming years?

Our ambition is to continue developing Vertbaudet in the markets served by bol. We see bol as a strategic partner in our international growth. As our product range evolves and the expectations of families change, we want to continue offering Belgian and Dutch parents an increasingly complete offer, backed by the strength of the platform.
