Why you need CE markings

Two laughing employees.

Happy customers return more often and return fewer items – that's why it's important to offer them a safe and reliable product range. A product range that complies with relevant regulations, because that ensures you're doing things right. We will also be performing more frequent checks on CE markings in the near future.

To show that your items comply with safety, health, and environmental requirements, there is the so-called CE marking. For most items introduced to the market in the European Union (EU), this marking is even mandatory!

Is the CE marking also mandatory for you?

For example, do you sell toys, electronics, personal protective equipment or medical devices? Then it is likely that your item needs a CE marking. Your responsibilities depend on your role – whether you are the importer, distributor, or manufacturer. Here's how you check if you need a CE marking for your item(s):

  • Step 1: Is your item listed in this overview of product categories for which a CE marking is mandatory? Then proceed to step 2.
  • Step 2: Check whether the item, packaging, or accompanying document contains the correct instructions and information, namely:
    • the CE marking,
    • the type, batch, serial, or model number.
    • the safety information in Dutch or English, and
    • the trade name, brand name, or name and contact details of the manufacturer.
    • Are you offering an item that has been placed on the market from a country outside the EU? Then the trade name, brand name, or name and contact details of the importer must also be on or with the item.
  • Step 3: Make sure you have this information available at all times, as both we and the authorities may request it.
    • Are you a manufacturer? Then you are responsible for preparing and signing the documents associated with the CE marking – such as the technical documentation and the EC declaration of conformity. You can read more about it here. Please note: if you offer an item under your own (brand or trade) name, you are legally considered the manufacturer.
    • Are you an importer of an item from a country outside the EU? Then you must have a copy of the EC declaration of conformity. You do not need to prepare or sign any technical documentation yourself.
    • Are you a distributor? Then you only need to have the documents mentioned in step 2 available.

What if I don't meet this requirement?

The (safety) rules are legally determined – and therefore you must be able to demonstrate that you have the necessary CE marking(s). If not, you are legally in violation. This means you can receive a fine, your item may be refused by bol, or it may be taken offline. All this is to prevent customers from being endangered by potentially unsafe items.
