Self-promotion

'Self-promotion' is one of the categories of policy violations that we monitor. Self-promotion includes any activity that promotes your own store and/or items in an unauthorized manner. On this page, you will read more about it.

Referring to own company details

What is allowed, for example:

  • Include a flyer with your order with a reference to your own (web) store or social media page printed on it.
  • Package the order in a shipping box with a reference to your own (web) store or social media page printed on it. The shipping box must be unbranded or show only the company name with which you are active on bol. You can also use shipping boxes purchased directly from bol with the bol logo on them.
  • Refer to your own (web) store in the product description and/or images.
  • Send discount coupons, newsletters or marketing campaigns that reference your own (web) store or social media page.
  • Requesting the customer an affiliate/seller review.
  • Sending a review request for an item (e.g. via e-mail or social media) insinuating a 5-star rating. For example by showing 5 stars or linking a (win) action to the review request.
  • Sending an additional e-mail to the customer with a review request for the item.
  • Sending an extra e-mail about the item with a manual. You can add a manual digitally as an attribute to your item.
  • Sending an extra e-mail to the customer with an e-book.
  • Asking a customer to order directly from you, outside of bol. For example, on your invoice or via a separate flyer in the order.
  • Put a link to your website on your invoice as part of your contact information.
  • Include an e-mail address on your seller page or in your shop name.

What is allowed:

  • Add a flyer to the order, which contains your assortment, as long as the flyer refers the customer to bol and not to your own (web) store or social media page.
  • Provide an invoice by uploading it via the ‘invoice requests’ tab in the seller dashboard or the Retailer API.
  • A request for an honest item review on bol (literally mentioning ‘honest review’ in the e-mail), provided this request does not result in an additional e-mail to the customer.
  • A request for an honest product review on bol (literally mentioning ‘honest review’ in the e-mail), provided this request does not result in an additional e-mail to the customer.

‘Discounts’ in the product description and/or image

What is not allowed, for example:

  • Include ‘1+1 gratis’ in the title, product description or images.
  • Include terms such as ‘gratis’ or ‘gratis verzending’ in the title, product description or images.

Post your own reviews to your own products

What is not allowed, for example:

  • Leave one or more reviews for your own items.
  • Ask someone you know to leave one or more reviews on your items, if they have not purchased or used the item.
  • Provide customers with a sample text for a review.

What is allowed:

  • Let your customers know about the option of leaving a review, without directing the content and level of that review, provided the review request does not lead to an additional contact or e-mail moment with the customer.
