Self-promotion

Self-promotion is one of the categories of policy violations that we monitor. Self-promotion includes all activities that promote your own shop and/or items in an unauthorized manner. On this page, you can read what we mean by this.

Posting item reviews for your own items

What is not allowed, for example:

  • Posting item reviews, or ratings, for your own items.
  • Posting negative item reviews for items from other partners.
  • Placing (or having placed) false orders.
  • Impersonating someone else.
  • Item reviews from non-existent people.
  • Item reviews from people who have not bought and/or used the item.
  • Item reviews not based on a real experience.
  • Asking someone you know to leave one or more item reviews for your items.
  • Asking customers to remove an item review.
  • Influencing the form or content of item reviews.
  • Providing a customer with example text for an item review.
  • Boosting positive and/or negative item reviews using the “helpful” button.
  • Sponsored reviews, or offering compensation for writing a review. For example, by providing the item (temporarily) for free, offering a discount, or a gift card.

What is allowed, for example:

  • Informing your customers about the possibility of leaving an item review, without influencing the content and rating of that item review, provided that the request does not lead to an additional contact or email moment with the customer.

Also see the conditions for item reviews.

Product ranking manipulation

What is not allowed, for example:

  • All activities intended to artificially influence item ranking and search results, for example by simulating user behavior.
  • Hiring a third party to simulate user behavior and/or automatically influence item ranking and search results (for example, through robots or clickbots).

What is allowed, for example:

  • Expanding your content or making it more appealing with better photos.
  • Increasing your visibility and sales by setting up your own promotions.
  • Analyzing your prices to prevent (excessively) high prices.

Referring to your own company details

What is not allowed, for example:

  • Adding a leaflet to your order that refers to your own (web)shop or social media page.
  • Packaging the order in a shipping box that has a reference to your own (web)shop or social media page printed on it. The shipping box must be unbranded or may only display the company name under which you are active via bol. You can also use shipping boxes purchased directly from bol with the bol logo on them.
  • Placing a reference to your own (web)shop in the item description and/or images.
  • Sending discount vouchers, newsletters, or marketing campaigns that refer to your own (web)shop or social media page.
  • A request to the customer for a partner/seller review.
  • Sending a review request for an item (for example, via email or social media) that implies giving a 5-star review. For example, by showing 5 stars or linking a competition to the review request.
  • Sending an extra email to the customer with a review request for the item.
  • Sending an extra email about the item with a manual. You can digitally add a manual as an attribute to your item.
  • Sending an extra email to the customer with an e-book.
  • Asking a customer to order directly from you, outside of bol. For example, on your invoice or via a separate leaflet in the order.
  • Placing a link to your website on your invoice as part of your contact details.
  • Mentioning an email address on your seller page or in your seller name.

What is allowed, for example:

  • Adding a leaflet with your product range to the order, if the leaflet refers to bol and not to your own (web)shop or social media page.
  • Providing an invoice by uploading it via the 'invoice requests' tab in the seller account or the Retailer API.
  • A request for an honest item review via bol (literally state 'honest review' in the email), provided that this request does not lead to an extra email to the customer.

Discount promotions in the item description and/or image

What is not allowed, for example:

  • Including ‘1+1 free’ in the title, item description, or images.
  • Terms like ‘free’ or ‘free shipping’ in the title, item description, or images.

Good to know

If you have multiple seller accounts, bol has the authority to deduct the relevant number of points from all your accounts linked to the same Chamber of Commerce number and/or VAT number in case of a ‘Self-promotion’ policy violation.
