New rules for warranty and repair (EmpCo)
Prepare for the European directive on consumer rights. New European rules, Empowering Consumers for the Green Transition (EmpCo), will apply from September 26, 2026.
These rules aim to better inform customers about the lifespan and repair options of items. Bol will implement these changes on product pages starting July 22, 2026. This way, we collectively comply with legislation and help customers make informed choices.
What is changing?
A clear distinction is made between the legal warranty and the additional commercial warranty. For the legal warranty, bol automatically adds a label to the relevant product pages. You do not need to do anything for this. Do you offer an extra commercial warranty from the manufacturer or as a partner? Then it is mandatory to display this via a specific GARAN label. This will state the number of years of extra warranty in figures.
Spare parts and repair
For specific product categories, such as washing machines, smartphones, televisions, and e-bikes, spare parts must remain available for 7 to 10 years. This promotes the repair of items and extends their lifespan. Additionally, you can add optional information to your items, such as a repair score or the period during which software updates are available.
What should you do?
Check if your items have a commercial warranty. If so, you must provide proof of this (such as an image of the GARAN label in PDF, jpeg, or png) via your seller account. Do you sell items for which spare parts are mandatory? Then check with your supplier or manufacturer if they are aware and have sufficient parts in stock.
