Good Choice changes to sustainability features

Customers should be able to clearly see the specific sustainability benefit of an item and what that benefit is based on. That's why we are replacing the Good Choice label with multiple sustainability features. These features concretely show why an item is highlighted, for example, because it helps save energy, insulates, or contains recycled material. This makes our communication clearer and more objective.

An item can receive a label if it carries a certification that Milieu Centraal considers ambitious, and/or has a sustainability feature aligned with Milieu Centraal (for example, a refill pack of an item). An item can also receive a label if its producer is a certified B Corp, has an ANBI status, or the CBF quality mark.

An item can have multiple features or certifications and thus multiple labels. Do you have a product range with sustainability features that is not yet labeled? Request a label here! This is possible for everyone and freely accessible (and free). Provide the correct evidence and the label will be assigned.

The current 'Good Choice' items will be automatically converted to one of the new labels, provided they still comply with the policy (read below). The image below shows an overview of the new labels.

The conversion from the Good Choice label to our new labels will take place from September 14 until September 27, 2026, at the latest. This is a broader timeframe than usual because the conversion requires a lot of time, specifically on the web and in the App. When the conversion is completed, the tightening of our policy will also take effect. You can read more about this below.

In addition to the change from the Good Choice label to the new sustainability features, developments in sustainability are ongoing. The requirements for what can be qualified as a more sustainable product range are becoming increasingly stringent from the industry and the European Union. As a result, some certifications or features in our policy no longer meet the requirements. Milieu Centraal is the objective external research partner that advises us in this area. Their knowledge and insights regarding sustainability are constantly evolving. To stay in line with the latest insights and laws and regulations concerning sustainability, Milieu Centraal occasionally advises us to remove some certifications from our policy.

The Good Choice label and some other certifications will disappear between September 14 and September 27, 2026, as explained earlier. Please note: we are not taking these items offline.

The following certifications are disappearing from our policy due to new research by Milieu Centraal, which has shown that these certifications no longer meet the stricter conditions of the new ECGT legislation:

• Groen Gedaan
• Groenkeur
• ICADA
• Nordic Swan Ecolabel (Cosmetics)
• Natural Cosmetics Standard
• Nordic Swan Ecolabel (Paint)
• Ecocert
• CSE
• Better Biomass
• On the Way to Planetproof
• Soil association

In addition, the following features from the latest Milieu Centraal research have been found insufficient to receive a label.

• Plant-based milk substitutes
• Cat litter
• HR++ windows
• Shampoo bars: due to the frequent inclusion of vegetable oils, shampoo bars can have a higher environmental impact, which has led to them no longer being able to receive a label.
• Natural enemies
• Induction hobs: Given that induction hobs have become the standard, they are no longer a distinguishing element.
• Ni-Mh Rechargeable batteries: the environmental impact of these batteries is significantly higher, leading to displacement to other

environmental aspects and cannot be considered waste-saving.

The following features have now been added to our policy since the last Milieu Centraal research:

• Laptop parts: spare parts that can extend the lifespan of laptops
• Potting soil: items that are peat-free are eligible for a sustainability feature
• Batteries for speakers: spare parts that can extend the lifespan of a speaker
• Compressor repair kit refrigerator: spare parts that can extend the lifespan of a refrigerator
• Refrigerator replacement parts: spare parts that can extend the lifespan of a refrigerator
• Battery for stick vacuum cleaner: spare parts that can extend the lifespan of a stick vacuum cleaner
• PFAS- and PFC-free: The PFAS substance group is problematic, which is why consumers are advised against buying items with these substances. Based on the precautionary principle, Milieu Centraal recommends alternatives to PFAS-containing products.
• Natural Cosmetics Organic: The standard certification no longer meets the requirements, but the Organic variant is now a possibility to receive a label.

We understand that this impacts our product range. At the same time, we want to use our sustainability features as reliably and independently as possible and not mislead customers. Therefore, the label for these items will disappear after September 14, 2026.

For all other certifications not mentioned above, nothing changes. Items with these certifications are still eligible for a sustainability feature. Want to know more? Check out this page*.
