Self-promotion
Self-promotion is one of the categories of policy violations that we monitor. Self-promotion includes all activities that promote your own shop and/or items in an unauthorised way. On this page you can read what we mean by this.
Placing item reviews on your own items
What is not allowed, for example:
- Item reviews, or placing reviews on your own items.
- Placing negative item reviews on items of other partners.
- Placing or having fake orders placed.
- Pretending to be someone else.
- Item reviews from people who do not exist.
- Item reviews from people who have not bought and/or used the item.
- Item reviews that are not based on a real experience.
- Asking someone you know to leave one or more item reviews on your items.
- Asking customers to remove an item review.
- Steering the form or content of an item review.
- Giving a customer a sample text for an item review.
- Boosting positive and/or negative item reviews using the "helpful" button.
- Sponsored reviews, or offering compensation for writing a review. For example, in the form of providing the item for free (temporarily), giving a discount, or offering a gift card.
What is allowed, for example:
- Informing your customers about the possibility of leaving an item review, without steering the content or score of that item review, provided the request does not lead to an additional contact or email moment with the customer.
See also the terms and conditions for product reviews.
Item ranking manipulation
What is not allowed, for example:
- All activities intended to artificially influence item ranking and search results, for example by simulating user behaviour.
- Hiring a third party to simulate user behaviour and/or artificially influence item ranking and search results in an automated way (for example by using robots or clickbots).
What is allowed, for example:
- Expanding your content or making it more attractive with better photos.
- Increasing your visibility and turnover by setting up promotions yourself.
- Analysing your prices to avoid (overly) high prices.
Reference to your own company details
What is not allowed, for example
- Adding a flyer to your order with a reference to your own (web)shop or social media page.
- Packaging the order in a shipping box printed with a reference to your own (web)shop or social media page. The shipping box must be unbranded or may only display the company name you use to operate via bol. You can also use shipping boxes purchased directly from bol with the bol logo on them.
- Placing a reference to your own (web)shop in the item description and/or images.
- Sending discount coupons, newsletters, or marketing campaigns that refer to your own (web)shop or social media page.
- A request to the customer for a partner/seller review.
- Sending a review request for an item (for example via email or social media) that insinuates giving a 5-star review. For example by displaying 5 stars or linking a (contest) promotion to the review request.
- Sending an extra email to the customer with a review request for the item.
- Sending an extra email about the item containing a manual. You can add a manual digitally as an attribute to your item.
- Asking a customer to order directly from you, outside of bol. For example on your invoice or via a separate flyer in the order.
- Placing a link to your website on your invoice as part of your contact details.
- Displaying an email address on your seller page or in your selling name.
What is allowed, for example
- Adding a flyer featuring your product range to the order, provided the flyer refers to bol and contains no reference to your own (web)shop or social media page.
- Providing an invoice by uploading it via the 'invoice requests' tab in the seller account or the Retailer API.
- A request for an honest item review via bol (literally mention honest review in the email), provided this request does not result in an extra email to the customer.
'Discount promotions' in the item description and/or image
What is not allowed, for example
- Including '1+1 free' in the title, item description, or images.
- Using terms like 'free' or 'free shipping' in the title, item description, or images.
Please note!
The examples on this page are for illustrative purposes only and are not exhaustive.
