Refurbished items
A refurbished item is a type of second-hand item that has been professionally tested, repaired, and cleaned, so that it functions properly and can then be offered for sale again.
Refurbished items
Refurbished items come from various places, such as excess stock, technical defects, or, for instance, an exchange programme. Since they are not 100% new, but also not second-hand, it must be made very clear during the sale that it is a refurbished item. In addition, the different types of refurbished items are classified based on their appearance into grade A, B, or C.
Refurbished is often associated with phones and computers but can be used for all kinds of (electronic) items, from washing machines to pushchairs.
To be able to sell refurbished items, partners must apply for selling rights. This allows us to ensure that these items are offered and sold correctly.
Please note:
right now, you can only offer refurbished product ranges if you use the special Refurbished Offer API. We are working on making this possible via your seller account as well.
Definition of refurbished
At bol, we use the following definition for refurbished:
“A type of second-hand item that has been professionally tested and inspected, repaired where necessary, and cleaned, so that it functions properly and can then be offered for sale again.”
Refurbished is not:
- a new item
- a second-hand or returned item that (directly) gets a 2nd chance at sale without inspection
Grading
The grading of a refurbished item says something about the quality of the item's appearance (and not about the quality):
- Grade A (as good as new)
- Grade B (lightly used)
- Grade C (visibly used)
Grading can include various characteristics within a product group. Every refurbished item sold via bol must be 100% functional, meaning that it functions properly.
See the overview below for all product groups that are currently allowed to be sold as refurbished and which grading we apply per specific product group.

Brands
If you want to offer refurbished items from the brands Apple, Samsung, Edifier, Microsoft, Jabra, Sennheiser, Fresh n Rebel, Sony, LG, Philips, TCL, Nintendo and/or Sony Playstation, you must take the following (additional) conditions into account:
- On the purchase invoice(s), at least 3 different items per brand have been purchased within a product group (e.g., image & sound: smartphones, tablets & smartwatches). Offering fewer items is not sufficient to obtain the rights;
- Submission of a list of EANs for items of the relevant brand.
Selling rights
If you want to offer refurbished items on the Dutch and Belgian market via bol, you are required to apply for selling rights for your seller account(s). Apply for the rights via the seller account. Read more about selling rights.
