Image Guidelines

Images greatly help customers get a good idea of the item. Therefore, add as many images as possible showing the item from different perspectives. Furthermore, to remain visible on bol and Google, it is important that images comply with the following guidelines:

The main image must meet the following requirements:

  • The file size must be at least 30 KB and a maximum of 10 MB.
  • The image must be at least 500×500 pixels and a maximum of 6000×6000 pixels. White spaces in images do not count towards the stated minimum and maximum pixels.
  • The zoom function, which makes details of an item visible, works with images with a minimum size of 1200×1200 pixels.
  • Ensure that the main image has a white, neutral background with no visible shadows.
  • The item must be out of its packaging – with the exception of, for example, board games and media carriers. An image of the item in its packaging is also allowed, provided the item is also visible out of its packaging.
  • The main image must not contain models, texts, or other statements, and logos, icons, or other watermarks are not permitted.
  • The main image should be the front of the item. Do not use an image that combines the front, side, and rear views in one image for the main image.
  • The main image must not be a lifestyle image.
  • Do not use an illustration, drawing, logo, or icon to represent the item for the main image.
  • If your main image meets all the above points, you can view various examples of what a good product image should look like via this link .

Ensure that no illustration, drawing, logo, or icon is used to represent the item.
  • Photograph the item from different perspectives, and at least straight from the front and as full-frame as possible.
  • Also, photograph relevant details.
  • Include only the item itself and its accessories in the image, meaning only what the customer will receive.
  • The item must be out of its packaging – with the exception of, for example, board games and media carriers. An image of the item in its packaging is also allowed, provided there is also an image of the item out of its packaging.
  • Ensure a white, neutral background with no visible shadows. This is with the exception of lifestyle images; items in a specific setting.

If the images do not meet the above minimum or maximum requirements, an error message will be displayed.

Please note!

From 1 July 2025, we no longer enforce guidelines about images. Why? The guidelines are meant to improve visibility on bol and Google and increase sales opportunities. It has no direct consequence for the customer. However, we will continue to enforce the rules on self-promotion in images.

Images must not contain:

  • Discount labels, watermarks, company names, or company logos, as stated in the Conditions of Use.
  • Stickers from Kieskeurig or Consumentenbond.
  • Promotional elements like ‘buy now’, ‘cheap’, or ‘customizable’ or service-related information like ‘extended warranty’ or ‘free shipping’.
  • Generic or graphic images and illustrations that are not actual product images – with the exception of items in the categories ‘Hardware’ and ‘Vehicles and Parts’.
  • Comparisons with other items, such as products from other partners or other websites.
  • Reviews.
  • Spaces, because we cannot process them correctly otherwise.

In addition, every image undergoes several improvements before appearing on the platform. These improvements are:

  • White spaces are automatically cropped.
  • The quality is improved for the platform. This keeps loading times limited and ensures customers experience high page loading speed. This can affect the color accuracy and sharpness of the image(s).
  • If a duplicate is detected, this image will not be loaded. A duplicate is a one-to-one copy of the image.

Copyright

Not every image can simply be uploaded to the platform. Due to copyright, the following criteria apply:

  • If content – including images – has not been provided by you, it is also not permitted to use it outside of bol.
  • Images must be free of discount labels, watermarks, company names, or company logos.
  • It is not permitted to use images from Google Images. These images are rarely copyright-free, and their use can lead to claims. It is also not permitted to refer to images on other bol pages.
  • The content – including images – must not infringe on the rights of third parties, including, but not limited to, intellectual property rights. This includes trademark rights and copyright.
